Souls of Old

The cries have ceased. A soft, new head with a mop of dark hair and a smell so pure rested on her tired but satisfied frame. Mystified, she looks into the deep pools of knowledge connected to a spirit of old; locked in a body so new. Nothing could amount to this moment, surprising yet not unexpected. She felt it before the plus sign appeared. Not just the life, but the energy. She was amazed at how much a newborn could say with one look, an expression almost poking fun at her new disposition. A look that said: “I am not a child.”

How can it be that maturity is not dependent on age? It would seem logical that more life experienced – judged by years lived – equals a higher level of knowledge and insight. This is true when life is looked at from an earthly, present-orientated viewpoint, but there is a whole other level to consider in regards to maturity and wisdom. In select cases, adults can be less aware of the world than children. They wonder how a child could be so young, yet so aware of the world and its social implications. These children, also apparent in any human age and searching in a familiar world, have an acute ability to know the souls of others and feel things from another realm. These are the old souls.

Not all old souls know that they have been here before – a lot times they may struggle with feeling like they know the answer to a certain issue, but fight that knowledge because of rules and conventions imposed by other people of similar backgrounds, such as through religion. The old souls believe that there is something more – a deeper answer to a commandment, or way of living, that others seem to easily accept with a smaller explanation. Because of this, they grapple with the ideologies of God, religions, and the universe as a whole. The key is to first fully open the mind. Focusing on the small things first takes away from the spiritual fulfillment that lies ahead. The idea of God and the universe cannot fit into the small framework man sets out for it – in fact, the opposite is true: we as humans must tap into the universe to let the spiritual realm in. Once an old soul is told of its disposition, that human can rest at peace with who they are and why they are “weird” to most of their peers.

Souls can know each other. Sometimes this is not realized at first, but a connection is usually felt early on. This may be because they knew each other in a past life, or were simply meant to be placed in each others’ lives in order to make a difference in each other. When it is felt that God or some sort of higher power put another person in the heart, regardless of initial choice, soul mates can occur (I will deeper explore the Hollywood idea vs. the reality of soul mates in a future post). This is not to say that destiny means one is subject to an unchangeable fate– it means that things are meant to be because of the knowledge of the future God has.

I have met people that I have feelings about; notions that prove themselves to be true ages, or minutes, after I first feel them. Sometimes this is a hunch as to whether or not an individual is genuine, authentic, or can be trusted (the most friendly looking people can sometimes pull wool over the eyes of the unsuspecting). I have also felt other people become “stamped” onto my heart, not by my own doing, but through some powerful means, which I believe to be God.

Through this blog, I hope to explore all of the sub-ideas mentioned in this post. Remember, you must first believe that the answers are there in order to fully seek them.

The child found her interests – grew up thinking she was the normal one, when everyone else had really been wondering about her. Her hair tangled with the wind as she pretended she was in another world, imagining trickling creeks as coursing rivers and white patterns on the suburban ceiling as the rich topography of another planet, dense with cities and life. Little did she know that these thoughts were really analogies for how small she was, and how much detail lies in a seemingly empty space. She looked into her own dark eyes in the mirror and stepped back, frightened. Before she was aware of it, in that fast-beating moment, she saw the depth of who she used to be.
